Happy 100th Birthday Elliot Carter! - Matt Haimovitz, cello with Geoff Burleson, piano
In December, 2008 one of the most important figures in music, composer Elliot Carter, will celebrate his 100th birthday. Haimovitz honors this milestone with a performance of Carters 1946 Sonata for Cello and Piano, one of the greatest 20th century works in the sonata genre. This will be paired with Samuel Barbers romantic Sonata from 1932. The recording of these works, to be released in fall 2008, will include two works for cello and piano by the next generation of composers: David Sanfords 22 Part I and a new work Cantos for Slava (Mstislav Rostropovich) by Augusta Read Thomas commissioned especially for the project, and as part of the ASCAP Concert Music Award given to Haimovitz in 2006.
On tour, Haimovitz and Burleson will be offering two variations on the program - all four 20th/21st century works, or the Carter and Thomas works juxtaposed with two Beethoven Sonatas.
Program I:
David Sanford: 22 Part I for cello and piano
Elliot Carter: Sonata for Cello and Piano
Intermission
Augusta Read Thomas: TBA (2008)
Samuel Barber: Sonata for Cello and Piano
Program II:
Beethoven: Cello Sonata Op. 102 No. 1
Elliot Carter: Sonata for Cello and Piano
Intermission
Augusta Read Thomas Cantos for Slava  (2008)
