The plan approved Tuesday by the faculty of arts and sciences is designed to broaden access to many articles, which are usually found only in expensive scholarly journals with small circulations.

The move was proposed by computer science professor Stuart Shieber who says it gives scholars more control over how their work is used and disseminated.

Provost Steven Hyman says the university has an obligation to distribute significant research as widely as possible.

The repository of articles would be maintained by the university, while the professors would retain copyright.
